
THERE is a lot more to radio than deejays talking and playing songs. "Radio is not just about people with great voices," says Planet Radio organising chairman Kudsia Kahar.
"There is a team comprising news and traffic reporters, advertising sales representatives, engineers and research employees who give radio its unique spark," adds Kudsia.Planet Radio was a first-of-its-kind event recently organised by Commercial Radio Malaysia (CRM) at All Asia Broadcast Centre, Kuala Lumpur. More than two dozen students, most of them majoring in Mass Communications, from various colleges and universities, attended the event to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes of a radio station,. "There's a vast pool of talent we want to attract and groom," says CRM president Datuk Borhanuddin Osman. "Radio is a fast-paced and exciting medium that is evolving rapidly. Planet Radio is an opportunity to engage young talents to be the future leaders of the industry.
"The event was a collaborative effort by all 19 radio stations under the CRM umbrella to introduce a broad mix of career opportunities in the sector. Representatives from the various radio stations presented topics ranging from programming, production, publicity, sales, marketing, operations and promotions.
At Planet Radio, a first-of-its-kind event.The presentations included Introduction to Talk Radio by BFM managing director Malek Ali, who spoke on radio formats and the brand positioning of individual radio stations.Jayaram Nagaraj from AMP Radio Networks explained that radio is no longer just a music box but a multi-media entity in his presentation Future Technology of Radio.
Participants interacted with their favourite announcers - Pietro, Phat Fabes, Nadia, Aanantha, Uthaya, Revathy, Salleh Yaacob, Non, Jin, Mei Yen and Wai Fun - from the various radio stations during lunch. They also had a chance to watch some of the announcers "live" on air during a tour of the studios.
